Designer brief & source notes

Composition

Question on the left 45%, cassette on the right. Angle the cassette toward the type. Keep the loose tape below the headline. Quiet dark teal on the left; amber light on the object.

Build direction

Use a 1280 × 720 canvas with 64 px side and 40 px vertical margins for essential content. Set WHO SANG above THIS? as live condensed text. Use Big Shoulders Bold or an approved equivalent.

Reserve the bottom-right 190 × 55 px for the duration badge. Check the final at 160 × 90 and 320 × 180. The downloadable map shows the intended zones.

Image selection

The supplied hero is an original mockup. For the final, photograph an unbranded cassette or source a commercially licensed generic photo. A blank label communicates the missing name without inventing documentary evidence.

Source & truth check

FEX’s official history dates the identification to November 2024, following the search that began in 2007.

This is a retrospective story. The song was identified as Subways of Your Mind by FEX. The cassette shown is imagined. Archive photographs and song audio require separate clearance.

Designer brief & source notes

Composition

Question on the left 47%. Paper, envelope and one original cicada illustration on the right. Keep the background 3301 low-contrast so it provides context without fighting the headline.

Build direction

Use a 1280 × 720 canvas, 64 px side and 40 px vertical essential-content margins. Set WHO SENT above THIS? as live bold type. Give the insect enough space to remain readable at 160 × 90.

Keep the duration zone clear. Reduce paper texture before making the words smaller. No fake cipher strings or decorative “clues”.

Image selection

Use fresh paper-and-insect artwork or a newly photographed still life. The envelope is a storytelling device, not a recovered invitation. The original puzzle archive is a research lead, not an automatic commercial image license.

Source & truth check

The Cicada Solvers archive preserves original puzzle material from 2012 onward.

Check historical claims against authenticated messages. An anonymous sender does not prove a CIA, criminal or cult connection. Do not present newly generated artwork as an authentic puzzle.

Designer brief & source notes

Composition

Question on the left 48%, one CRT on the right. Show two simple editable rectangles on a pale screen. Quiet black background, blue spill and a restrained red edge light.

Build direction

Use a 1280 × 720 canvas with 64 px side and 40 px vertical essential-content margins. Set WHY UPLOAD above THIS? as live type. Redraw the screen motif as basic editable shapes.

Keep the bottom-right duration zone clear and both rectangles distinct at 160 × 90. No surveillance insignia, alarming counters or unverified upload numbers.

Image selection

The supplied CRT is an original illustration. It is an imagined setting, not a claim about the recording equipment used for the original uploads. Basic colored shapes communicate the subject without importing third-party footage.

Source & truth check

Google’s engineering account explains that automated videos on a Google-owned public channel tested YouTube rendering quality.

The explanation is documented. Build curiosity around the public’s interpretation of the channel, not a claim that it remains an unsolved threat. The source is a factual reference, not a media reuse license.
